12L14 Response to Case Hardening and Blueing
12L14 Response to Case Hardening and Blueing
(OP)
Does anyone have experience with working with 12L14?
I have a small (.200" dia) pivot piece that has a small .047" wide circlip groove cut inside the .156" dia bore.
The machine shop suggested 12L14 to help with cutting the groove.
The part is lightly loaded but needs to have about a .010" case for wear resistance. The part also will be blued.
Any help is appreciated!
Bill

RE: 12L14 Response to Case Hardening and Blueing
No problem. It will case harden and it will blue.
I have an associate who makes gunsites. I recommended 12L14 because one model requred dovetailing along with other intensive machining. He does not need to case harden his parts but he does blue them. Any low-carbon steel is susceptible to case hardening by carburizing. If you are making small quantities, you will probably want to use a product such aa Kasenite to case harden. This can be done with an oxy-acetylene torch.

Thanks for the reply. This gives me confidence that things will work out.
My heat treater was saying that the atmosphere in the carburizing furnace needed an Ammonia dope prevent spotty carburizing.
I'll reply back here when the project is finished.
