I am about to try to qualify a weld overlay procedure to ASME section 9.

Question:

For the transverse bend tests - what should the width of the speciman be?  That is when I saw the transverse specimens for the bend tests - how much do I offset the saw to make a specimen?

For corrosion resistant weld overlay procedure qualification on plate in accordance with ASME Section IX (2001 Edition, 2003 Addendum)the following apply per QW 453;

Note 1. the coupon shall be 6" in length X 6" wide with the base metal thickness selected for base metal qualification. The weld overlay shall be deposited a minimum of 1.5" in width and over the length of the coupon.

Note 5, per Article IV, QW 453, qualification of the corrosion resistant weld overlay shall require 4 guided side-bend tests. Two of the side bends can be removed parallel to the direction of welding and two can be removed perpendicular to the direction of welding OR all four guided side-bend test specimens can be removed perpendicular to the direction of welding.

Note 4, per QW 161, the width of the side bend shall be 3/4" for base metal 3/8" to 1.5" in thickness. For base metal thickness less than 3/8", the width of the guided side-bend specimen can equal the thickness of the base metal. For base metal thickness greater than 1.5", the width of the bend specimen shall equal the width of the test jig.

If I understand the question correctly, Jackiboot is asking about the thickness of the bend test specimen qand not the width.
The Note 4 is applicable to Butt welds and generally not so critical for overlays as you will be only covering entire thickness of base material by using equal strips of width as specified by Metengr.
To reply to the original question,
w=3/8" minimum. See notes 1a and 1b to QW 462.2 where if the base material is other than P1, only if specimens are gas cut, additional 1/8" on either side of specimen need to be removed by machining/gdging. Here since you are already using SAW cut, all that you need to do is ensure that the final thk of spcm is 3/8" minimum.
