ASME SEC. IX - Thickness Qual.

ASME SEC. IX - Thickness Qual.

ASME SEC. IX - Thickness Qual.

(OP)
In chart QW-452.1(b) (2001) version, it shows a thickness of weld metal coupon - 1/2" and the weld metal thickness qualified as 'Maximum to be Welded'.
Does this mean if a welder does a qualification test on 1/2" thick material, he is qualified for all thicknesses? This seems to conflict with the other listing 'All' and '2t'.

For example, if a welder takes a test on 1/2" w.t. pipe, he is qualified for all w.t. but if he tests on 0.400" w.t. pipe, he is only qualified up to 0.800" w.t.

Is this a correct interpretation or did I miss some other restriction? Thanks.

RE: ASME SEC. IX - Thickness Qual.

Also review QW-350 thru QW-385. Pay attention to the requirements of QW-403 and QW-404.

RE: ASME SEC. IX - Thickness Qual.

In order to qualify for the "max to be welded", the welder must deposit at least three weld passes on a test coupon of at least 1/2".  Otherwise, the range of qualification is twice the coupon thickness.
