Question about Layers

Question about Layers

Question about Layers

(OP)
I noticed that if I draw something in a SW drawing and then add layers to the drawing, everything drawn before I added the layers is not connected to a layer.  Also everything I draw after adding layers, must be connected to a layer.  I wouldn't mind this except that undefined items drawn on a layer don't show up blue.  Is there something I'm missing, or is this the way it's supposed to be?  I usually don't bother with layers at all but in this case I find it useful to hide stuff I've drawn temporarily.

RE: Question about Layers

When I start a drawing everything is on the "None" - True

When I click on Layer properties to add a new layer. I have one layer already there - "Format" and it's black.

After you start a new layer then everything added after that will be on that layer, because it will be the active layer. To change it back to "None" or to a different layer then you change it in the property manager of the line, text, etc...

or

Turn the Layer Toolbar on and pick (or activate) the approriate layer you want your lines, text, etc... layer to defaultly be on. This away if you want one line to be on Layer "None" you have "None in the Layer property box active and so on...

Great answer!! Thank you Scott.  I have just two more questions.  I use SW2001+.

First, why do undefined lines drawn in Layer "none" show up blue, but undefined lines drawn in any other layer show up black?

Second, can you hide layer "none"?  There is no layer "none" in "Layer Properties."

RE: Question about Layers

I'm not sure if it's the same in SW01+ but I believe it is. I'm using SW04 SP4.0 to get this information.

The reason they show up as blue is because that is the default color. Pick a line and then pick click on the "Line color" Icon. You will see that in the color palette "Default" is checked. If you uncheck that and click OK. the line stays blue. But if you toggle "Color Display mode" the line will now go black.

When I add a line on that layer it is by default blue and the option "Default" is checked. If I uncheck that option, like I did above, the line turns black with the "Color Disply Mode" activated.

No you can't hide Layer "None". It's always on and cannot be hidden. If you want something hidden, you will have to move it to another layer.

RE: Question about Layers

Change the Active layer to "None" add them there, then change the layer to whatever layer you want them to be on later. You can window select all of them and move them to the layer.

Show the "Line Format" toolbar. There's a button "Color Display Mode" which will toggle between layer colors and sketch status color.
