Custom Materials in 2004 - Has anyone done this?
(OP)
Hello all,
I am tyring to setup a custom Material file for our company. I tried copying the Solidworks file, renamed it, and started to modify it. I added one material to it and the file is not work anymore. I get an error about column not correct. I have added all the materials thru the solidworks software.
Any thoughts on how to fix it?
IS there another way to create the need file and materials?
Can you copy materials from the solidworks file to your own?
Thanks for the help.
Rob

Check the Help > Index files for Materials Editor PropertyManager
RE: Custom Materials in 2004 - Has anyone done this?
1) You Click Edit material
2) Pick a material (any)
3) Click "Create/Edit Material" button below the material list
4) A new menu pops up - Pick the drop down and select "<New Material Database>"
5) Give a name that you want your Database to be (not like a material name just a DB name e.g. - "Scott's DB of material"
6) Now give it a Material Classification - e.g. Steel
7) Then a material name - e.g. 1020 Steel
8) You can give it Visual properties
9) Then Physical properties
10) And Finally crosshatch info.
11) Click OK and your new DB comes up.
If you go to C:\Program Files\Solidworks\Lang\English\sldmaterials and open in notepad "Solidworks Materials.sldmat" - you can copy that data out and paste it into your the DB you just made. DO NOT EDIT THE ORIGINAL SW DB!! Once you change it or if you messed it up, then the only way to fix it is to reinstall SW. That's why you copy the data and paste into your new DB. Change it there.

Don't want anymore than just the one Candle. I'm getting to that age, that if I used that many candles I would burn my house down.

With SP3.0 you now have the ability to change the Physical properties. The units will change according to the units you have picked under Tools\Options.
Inches - lb/in^2
Millimeters - lb/mm^2
etc...

What version of SW are you on? And service packs? I believe there were modifications to the materials database in 3.1 and 4.0 in SW2004. You might need to upgrade your service packs
