Quick question: Looking for word in english.

Quick question: Looking for word in english.

What terms do you use in english when an engine (typically diesel) overspeeds out of control? This is typical of big diesel truck and generators, when the injectors fail in such a way that the engine accelarates out of control and the only way to shut it down is by cutting the fuel supply. I don't mean the term "overspeed", which covers situations that aren't as grave as the condition I'm describing.

In spanish, particularly here in the Dominican Rep., we refer to such conditions as "desbocar" or "embalar". "Desbocar" is also used for horses. "Embalar" is used less frequently for diesel engines, but quite frequently for turbines.

Please let me know your respective areas of residence, in case there are regional differences. For example, US vs UK, etc.

RE: Quick question: Looking for word in english.

In the UK we would probably use the term 'overspeed' or the slightly more graphic 'runaway'. On most sites 'overspeed' is typical, but this may be the somewhat conservative and understated nature of the English. Our American cousins may have a more imaginative name.

RE: Quick question: Looking for word in english.

i agree , its called runaway.  Wouldn't like to stand next to one thats started...

RE: Quick question: Looking for word in english.

Overspeed conveys a meaning that the situation is recoverable, by taking some kind of governing action, reduce fuel, trip fuel, trip stop valves, intercept valves, etc., (turbine overspeed)etc.,

Runaway connotes that all of the above are not applicable due to whatever reason, and the situation is out of control, and that catastrophic failure is iminent, and that one might want to consider "running".

Hmm...so that's why they named that movie 'Runaway' back in the 80s.

Thanks, all.

RE: Quick question: Looking for word in english.

"Unintended Acceleration" comes to mind . . . (my apologies to Audi).
