Assembly Question

Assembly Question

Assembly Question

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm trying to reduce the file size of an assmebly by saving it as a single part file. Theproblem is that when i do this, the file size of the part file doubles in size. I tried all the options of export when saving as a part file, but nothing works. Am i missing something here? I successfully did this on another assembly i'm working on, it cut the file size in half for me. I'm running SW 04 with SP3.0 Thanks in advnace!

RE: Assembly Question

Are you counting the size of the original assembly AND all of the component files in your comparison?

RE: Assembly Question

i'm comparing the size of the assembly file (18mb) to the part file i created from the assembly, that is now 26mb.

RE: Assembly Question

My thoughts exactly Tick.  If you look at what makes up an assembly file, it is relatively small.  A bunch of pointers to part files and some mating information.  I think you would be hard pressed to reduce this by saving the assy as a part.  But when you take into consideration the handling of all the parts that make up the assy, you have a lot of data to keep track of.  I have had success doing this with off the shelf assemblies that I received from vendors (where I would never have to change their parts).  But the file sizes are usually bigger than if I just modelled the item as a single part altogether.  The time saved is the key factor in that instance.  It was desirable for me to not have to keep track of all the sub-components of the manufacturer's part.

My recommendation, is to tinker around with the options to save exterior faces, exterior components, and all components until you get the smallest file.  I have had the best success with the exterior components selection.

RE: Assembly Question

Are you trying to save file size on where the file is stored or the amount of memory it takes to load the single part vs the assembly?
