Do I still need a bib?

Do I still need a bib?

Do I still need a bib?

(OP)
This morning I put on a new neck tie for the first time.  As I was removing all of the tags, I noticed one of them proclaiming the stain resistance of the tie.

"Stain Shield - A water based stain repellent"

So now I am curious.  Will my new tie repel only water-based stains, or is it the stain repellent that is water-based?

I suppose I will find out at lunch time.

RE: Do I still need a bib?

I believe it is a "stain repellant that is water based".
A similar subject, watches that are "water resistant". A lot of people think it means the same as "water proof". They go in the water and find out shortly the watch no longer works.

RE: Do I still need a bib?

My wife was tired of me ruining pants at work, so she went out and bought me a bunch of those Stain Defender pants (I think Dockers), and I must say I was a bit skeptical about their performance.  During lunch a few weeks ago, I dumped an iced-coffee drink all over my slacks, and was amazed to see the coffee bead and run off onto the floor.  It didn't give the drink a chance to soak in to create a stain.

But working in a prototype environment, these stain blockers can't hold their own against red grease and hydraulic fluid.  Oh well.

Would it have clarified things if the tie was marked as "water based stain-repellant", with a hyphen?

Have you ever noticed that no matter how much soap and water you use or special degreasing cleaners, there is nothing like a clean white towel to catch the dirt?

RE: Do I still need a bib?

This reminds me of the classic movie "Man in the White Suit"(1951) starring Sir Alec Guinness. His character, a chimist suceeded in developing an indistructable cloth that would resist soiling. The clothing manufacture he worked for was ready to go with it until the other clothing manufactures showed him that the new cloth would be the death of their industry. Ironic ending. Very worthwhile viewing. Sir Guinness was great as always.

Transformer oil is right up there with hydraulic oil for its ability to test stain removers.

MintJulep;
What was the outcome of lunch?

I suppose if the stain repellent is water-based you use the tie until you need to wash it and then throw it away. Because after you wash the tie, the stain repellent is no longer effective.

Is that what happens to water based paints on cars? I wondered why mine rusted out so quick!
:O)

Meteng,

The tie appeared to be very effective in deflecting balsamic vinegrette away from itself and onto my shirt.
