I am trying to locate a copy of the following paper:

"Summary of Design Equations for Clamp Type Connectors" prepared for the Association of Wellhead Equipment Manufacturers prepared by Harry J. Sweet and Associates back in 1975.

This paper is the basis for the API Publication "Bending Moment Capacity Calculations for Special API Clamp/Hub Combinations"

I tried contacting the Assocation with no luck and I do not think Harry J. Sweet and Associates exists anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions or copies?

Harry Sweet passed away a few years ago, so neither he nor his company exists. The original work he did on clamp connectors was either in collaboration with Grayloc or paid for by Grayloc. I know they have the report as I was a former Engineering Manager there. But... Grayloc is very protective of their design information and I doubt if they would be willing to provide anyone outside the company with a copy of the report as it could certainly be the basis for starting up another competitor. The original report provides the equations witten in a Fortran program, but are not that difficult to extract from the report.

What is your specific interest in this area? I have MathCAD files which contain the current equations based on the work Harry Sweet did and in copmpliance with the ASME Code requirements. However, unless you have access to the specific geometry for the clamp components, they won't do you any good - the geomtery is quite complex.

Thank PMarinshaw for the reply.

I was unware that the work was done for Grayloc as they were not referenced in the API paper.

I am doing some work relating to Clamp-style Pressure Vessel Closures and I want to try to get as much information as I can. I am going through Appendix 24 of ASME Sec VIII and trying to figure out the rational behind the formulas to justify a design. Since you were in this area of work would you have any resources you could point to to provide a better understanding of the design?

PMarinshaw or zakk,

I'd be interested in the calculations for the clamps as I have to do an analysis on a single Woodco type clamp. I know the geometry and I've done the Appendix 24 calcs, but now have to interpret stresses to ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Appendix 4. Any leads in the right direction would be of great help.

Try Tyco Lindapter website and then contact them.

ASME South East Section Profession Development Course Spring 1998, Pressure Vessels: Detail and the Software from Grayloc and Tecnical detail example try and error to design Appendix 24 of ASME Sec VIII.

I still have the Software from the Course on the Desing of APPENDIX 24 DESIGN RULES FOR CLAMP CONNECTIONS. Contact ASME SOUTH EAST SECTION: The Coures Note's was $75.00.

I am very interesting in obtaining this information. I went to the ASME SE Section website and I do not know where to make contact to get purchasing information. Can you point me in the right direction?

I just purchased the latest course notes with no apparent reference to a clamp and hub example. It must be specific to the 1998 set of course notes. However, the 2003 notes are chocked full of great information.

I'd still be interested in seeing the design basis behind the Appendix 24 calculations. AWHEM does not sell these documents and are reluctant to distribute them to members.

If anyone has any other suggestion in this forum, I'd be happy to hear from them.

Thorman:

You must have much better connections with ASME South Texas than I. I have sent numerous requests for seminar notes and received zero replies.

I echo your request. If anyone has access to design information for Appendix 24 clamps, I too would like to hear from them.
