Hole Series Needs Tweeked
Hole Series Needs Tweeked
(OP)
Am I doing something wrong? Why is that when I use the Hole Series, according to the help menu "A Hole Series extends through each unsuppressed component in the assembly that intersects the axis of the hole"...how do I make it stop and only apply to the first 2 (or whatever) parts in the axis' path?

RE: Hole Series Needs Tweeked
In short,
A hole series will proceed through all of the solid bodies until it hits the first hidden or suppressed part.

RE: Hole Series Needs Tweeked
On my computer the Hole Series proceeds through all visible parts which are in the "line of fire" of the hole axis. It does not stop when it "hits the first hidden or suppressed part". Have I missed an option toggle or something?
I do not use the Hole Series feature because it is way too limited in it's functionality. It is not interactive ... if a part is added after the hole is made, it cannot simply be included into the series selection, the hole series has to be deleted & reinserted. Same thing if you change your mind on which parts are hidden or suppressed or if a part is extended into the hole series axis area. The part must be visible & in the "line of fire" at the time the Hole Series is placed or you are SOL.
The Hole Series concept is good, but it needs further development to make it fully interactive, for it to be a really functional & useful feature.
RE: Hole Series Needs Tweeked
Your topic or subject line is on Hole series, but yet your not using one?
If your just using a cut-extruded hole or hole wizard then you need to use the feature scope. In SW04 you RMB the feature and select Feature scope then remove what parts you don't want the feature to remove material from.

RE: Hole Series Needs Tweeked
Right on the money. Top expand on what you said I would like the open to select which part is the first and which is last, and which parts are in the middle. Also, the option to auto-insert fastening hardware is up there on my wish-list as well.
SBaugh,
A Hole Series created by the Hole Wizard does not have the Feature Scope as a choice in the RMB menu (at least in SW2004 SP1.0). Assembly feature Cut-Extrude does offer this choice tho.
All,
Just to thorw another question out there: How do you insert fasteners? Smart Mates and Mate References? Do you constrain them from rotating, or even do you just leave fasteners out all together? Does Toolbox help with this (I've never used it)?
Thanks,
Ken
RE: Hole Series Needs Tweeked
If you don't want your hole series to cut through the other parts you have to hide them. With the Cut-extrude you have to use Feature Scope to keep it from cutting through other parts...
When you use Hole Series it askes you if you want to insert a fastener. If you don't get this option then i assume you don't have Toolbox??
What about them?
Fasteners have mate references and it mates itself to the hole. But it does not constrain it from rotating. If you want that you will have to add it.
Yes it most certainly does.

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to get time to look at Toolbox but it never seems to happen.
