Need Help running 3 12VDC GEARHEAD MOTORS on one power source
Need Help running 3 12VDC GEARHEAD MOTORS on one power source
(OP)
Hello,
Basically, I am creating an animatronic sculpture, and need electrical engineering advice to power it. It is an old sewing mannequin, and I will attach mannequin arms and a mannequin head to it, all of which will move in slow oscillating movements once powered on, reminiscent of creepy automated display mannequins of the early 30's (or think of 'The ToyMaker' in Blade Runner).
Here is the motor I am planning to use to use for their movement:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=search&item=DCM-171&type=store
What I'd like to do is know how to perhaps have these three motors run into a singular power source (please excuse my lack of terminology!). Basically, I'd just like to have these three motors tie into one unified source so that I can plug the sculpture into a wall socket and it will turn on.
I know there must be a relatively simple solution (and I have freinds who can help me execute the electronics once we have a clear plan of how it needs to be done). I just need to know what is necessary to make it happen (ie: First, you need to run the wires into a power converter. Second, you'll need to..., etc., etc..)
Once you think you know the best way, can you point me in directions where to find electronics parts I might need to complete it?
Thanks SO MUCH!!!!!
Greg

RE: Need Help running 3 12VDC GEARHEAD MOTORS on one power source
Your web site says 0.91 amp low speed or 4 amp high speed.
Multiply 12 volt by low speed or high speed amp and then by 3. You will get either 33 or 144 watt.
There are many sources for power supplies, my prefered one is www.digikey.com. Search for power supplies then AC/DC converters. Select a power supply having a (say 20% minimum) higher than desired watt rating.
Would like to add two notes of warning.
1 There is always the possibility that these motors will fail and cause a fire.Protection should be provided to prevent the manaquin or it's clothes from catching on fire.
2 Have a qualified person do the electrical installation.
