Alternates to SA-516-70

(OP)
I am checking a number of alternates to SA-516-70.  This is a popular alloy.  But for strength, there are others out there.  Can someone suggest pluses and minuses for the following candidates ?  I am also concerned with weldability, weld procedure complications, field performance and cost.

DESIGNATION  THK REQT    ALLOWABLE        HEAT TREAT REQ'D
                         STRESS AT
                         650 F (PSI)

SA-516-70                  18,800       Normalized >1.5"
SA-299         > 1"        19,800       Normalized > 2"
SA-204B                    20,000       Normalized > 1.5"
SA-537 Cl 1    <2.5"       19500        Normalized < 2.5"
SA-537 Cl 2    <2.5"       22,300       Quenched & Tempered

SA-737B                    20,000       Normalized
SA-737C                    22,900       Normalized
SA-738A        < 2.5"      21,400       Normalized < 2.5" or Quenched & Tempered

SA-738C        < 2.5"      22,300       Quenched & Tempered

Thanks for your help.

The attached web site contains a plate steel specification guide from ISG that provides good source information on the various grades of steel plates in your list. Watch the footnotes for the particular grade of steel plate regarding post weld heat treatment affects on mechanical properties. Some of these plates can have their properties reduced by local post weld heat treatment.

The plates in this guide that do not have footnotes regarding post weld heat treatment can probably be readily welded using conventional processes. The welding procedure, preheat and post weld heat treatment will be governed by the applicable codes or standards that you will be working under (ASME or AWS, etc).

I would contact various plate suppliers for cost and delivery once you have reduced your list of potential plate specifications.

RE: Alternates to SA-516-70

With the exception of the SA-204B (P3) the others are all P-1 materials which should be relatively equal from the standpoint of weldability and WPS complications.  The application and fabrication code requirements will also have some bearing on the WPS.  Chances are SA-516-70 will be the way to go from a cost standpoint.
