Multi...

Multi...

Multi...

(OP)
In every other case that I am aware of, Multi is used as a prefix to mean more than one or many.  Why then is the sound system on a computer referred to as multimedia.  I must be missing something as in lost-in-the-translation.  This really bugs me beyond a reasonable degree.

Someone please correct me or enlighten me.

RE: Multi...

It can play more than one type of media. Sound, pics, video, etc.

RE: Multi...

I think the name "multimedia speakers" originates in the days when it was somewhat uncommon for a computer to be able to display video and/or play sounds...  I do remember how excited I was when I purchased my first sound card (Ad-lib brand 8-bit ISA card).
