RE: "Faffy"

Apologies jmw, by 'faffy' i was refering to the often difficult practice of getting the nut to sit squarly and engage evenly around the circumferance of the inner diameter of the cyclinder, 'faffy' just seemed quicker.

Thanks eg9arh, you'll note how tactfully i raised this in the languages forum and not in the original forum.

RE: "Faffy"

My fault entirely, long day at work, head starting to rock forward onto keyboard

Well i had to ask, having seen "ampacity" justified by some adroit internet resources open to us all.

RE: "Faffy"

faff

[Brit] to spend your time doing a lot of unimportant things instead of the thing you should be doing
I wish you'd stop faffing about and do something useful!

Sounds like the word applies more to the human type of nut.

RE: "Faffy"

Following on from Stevenal, it was a term commonly used in my youth in southern Africa.  Probably still used there.  I don't know its rigin, but it was certainly an entrenched part of the language.

We usually call this putzing, or occassionally, fiddling around.  But then I was raised in the South, matured in the midwest and back in the South.  Don't know which these came from.

RE: "Faffy"

Thanks guys - faffy is a great word. Many of my best designs have faffy elements (until they're defafficated, that is). I shall stop fannying about and use the word continually.

RE: "Faffy"

I was always of the opinion that faffing about was english slang but checking on the web it seems it's origin is danish http://members.tripod.com/~midgley/dialect.html. An example of faffing about is looking on the web for the meaning of faffing about, ee bye gum.

RE: "Faffy"

putzing is from Yiddish.
The politer form for 'putz' is idiot or fool
The less polite is a target for Viagra

RE: "Faffy"

The origin of many Yiddish is German, whereby the German spelling is "butz". In German, the word "butz" can mean several things :
1. An imaginary figure, mostly to scare small children into doing what they're told ("If you don't eat up your supper, the butz will get you."). --> Thus somebody which should't be taken seriously --> an idiot or fool
2. A small bit of something sticking out, for example the little thing sometimes sticking out at the injection site of injection molded plastic parts  --> a target for Viagra?
3. The core housing of certain fruits (apple, pear) containing the seeds, which is usually thrown away, although I know some people who like to eat the apple core.
