Draw line on sheet

Draw line on sheet

Draw line on sheet

(OP)
I am moving from Mechanical Desktop to Solidworks, and I have a question for you.  I have 2 parts I am putting on a single sheet, and I simply want to draw a vertical line on the sheet to divide the sheet into 2 sections.  In MDT, I would simply snap to the midpoint of the top border line and snap perpendicular to the bottom border line to make the vertical line.  I am having a little trouble with this in Solidworks.  Do I simply draw it on the sheet, or do I "edit sheet format" and then draw it?  Also, how do I "snap" (so to speak) from one line to another.
I have tried using the "Solidworks 2D Emulator" add-in, but that was just a crutch to use.

Thanks in advance,

Flores

RE: Draw line on sheet

If you want to constrain your line to sheet format entities, you will need to "edit sheet format".

If you are OK with just drawing the line across the sheet and not constraining it, I recommend that you lock sheet focus to ensure the line belongs to the sheet and not to a view which may move.  Select the sheet from the feature manager or RMB on the sheet outside of any views and select "Lock Sheet Focus" before drawing the line.

Thanks TheTick for the quick reply.

RE: Draw line on sheet

If you are going to do this frequently, it would pay you to create a template, or series of templates, for the most often used "split" layouts.

Good idea, I think I will make a few templates.
