Electronic file naming and organization

(OP)
We are trying to stablish a procedure to save drawing files. Icluding naming of the files and location.
Is there any standard for this? I found some information for paper drawings, but haven't find any for electronic files.
We would like to save all the old revisions, and we are trying to find a consitent way of naming the files and how to keep the historical information separated from the current one.

RE: Electronic file naming and organization

Our method before implementing PDM/EDM software was:

partno_shortdesc_rev.ext

You looked for a file within the sub-directory (partnos AAAA to ADDD) and found AACD_ScrewM4x10_R4.cad.
