Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

(OP)
I am helping an engineer design an underground hot/chilled water distribution system and am looking for as much useful help as possible.  We are looking at a pre-insulated pipe design with either FRP or PVC casing and Steel or Ductile Iron pipe vs. HDPE casing and Steel or Ductile Iron pipe. What are the benefits/detriments of either of these casing designs. Pipe sizes range from 24" down to 8".  Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

RE: Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

If your lines are only going to be service water lines, e.g. hot/chilled water lines, which are to be buried you are probably better off simply using a FRP pipe. If you choose to go with a DI line, your best bet is to make sure that it's encased in a polyethylene liner, typically to about 8 mils thickness, per ANSI C105. The HDPE Lined CS lines are generally used for more corrosive or abrasive applications, such as slurry service.

RE: Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

Call the operators of the Steam/chilled water system in Mpls., MN . They have had pipes underground there for 30 years. They use an insulated steel pipe system.

RE: Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

Contact Rovanco or Perma Pipe (you can find them with a Google search).  Both manufacture pre-insulated piping systems in a variety of materials and can give you pro's and con's based on your specific needs.

RE: Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

In Oz Tyco Water do a range of pipe for water service including PE coated DI.

As mentioned above why not go directly for PE pipe.  You obviously need to consider the strength at elevated temperature of any plastic (including fibreglass) pipe.

RE: Underground Pre-Insulated Pipe

Suggest that you go to this company. This is the most modern system on the market and is taking the Middle East by storm.

The grade of ABS used is not that used in the USA that caused all those problems years ago.

This resin has been used in Australia and the Far East for nearly forty years on pressure pipe up to DN 800.

For chilled water it is great as it doesnt have the problem of corrosion under the insulation as steel does. Reduces the need for chemical treatment.

I am designing a major complex in Dubai at the moment using this material. Have used straight ABS for the last thirty years in sewage treatment plants and mineral processing. Its as tough as nails and easier than steeel to assemble.
