We design spindle cooling water system for a industrial plant. I would like to know if I can use PVC sch40 instead of galvanized steel pipe. This cooling water is low pressure, but is treated water, so we have to conside corrosion.
Thanks for your help.

RE: Process Plant spindle water pipe material

First off what is the temperature of the cooling water return? This is the temperature that you have to take
into account. Generally Speaking you don't want to exceed
a cooling water return temperature of 65°C. Another drawback to PVC is it's durability in a industrial setting.

The best of both worlds would be a HDPE lined CS pipe. This would give you the durability of a steel pipe, and
take advantage of the HDPE liner for corrosion protection.

If it's a cost thing and your temperatures are in line, then you can probably get away with it, but it would not
be the best choice in my opinion.

Thank you for you reply.
Now what's the problem is general contractor hired us to design the plant piping system. The plant's engineer and us both agree to use galvanized steel pipe. But the general contractor ordered black steel, which is wrong, then he suggested PVC. He talked to the plant engineer, and told him PVC is low cost, and let us to support him. We understand PVC has more chance of breakage which will cause whole plant shut down.
