Power Transformer Initial Loading

Power Transformer Initial Loading

Power Transformer Initial Loading

(OP)
When intalling a new power transformer, it seems every engineers rule of thumb is to let it 'soak' for a day or two before loading the bank.  I understand why it is a good idea to practice this rule (i.e. sudden change in temp., windings may have been damaged during the move, oil dispacement, etc.), but I don't know if it's always necessary.
I have a situations where I need to remove an older tfr and replace it with a new 10/12.5 MVA tfr.  The 10MVA tfr will be moved about two miles on the day of the swap.  I would like to energize and load it the same day.  The initial load will be about 2-3 MW & be loaded to about 6 MW withing 24 hrs.
My question (finally!!)...Am I at risk if I soak the 10MVA tfr for a few days to get the oil and winding temp to a no load temp....move the tfr to it's new location....energize and load it on the same day?  I know it shouldn't be done bu can it be done?  And why?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long question.

RE: Power Transformer Initial Loading

I recommend checking with the transformer manufacturer.  If nothing else, to make sure you don't do anything to void the warranty.  Kuhlman's installation guide says don't energize for at least 8 hours after vacuum treatment and oil filling.  Then, after all testing, energize and allow the transformer to operate for at least one hour without load.  Keep under close observation for the first few hours, and check for oil leaks after several days of operation.

RE: Power Transformer Initial Loading

One concern may be “infant mortality,” where there is a greater chance defects show up shortly after first energization, and independent of any load.
