Light Gauge Metal over Wood Framing

Light Gauge Metal over Wood Framing

(OP)
I'm looking for shearwall/diaphragm values for using corrugated metal 24-29ga panels over wood framing. I've had several inquiries for structures like this as the price of steel has risen dramatically. The IBC has tables for wood panels over light gauge steel framing but not the other way around. I've contacted a couple of building suppliers but they had no such data. Still, they sell "pre-engineered" building systems, go figure. Thanks for any info.

RE: Light Gauge Metal over Wood Framing

Try contacting some of the pole-building manufacturers, like Wicks and Manard. They do this type of construction all the time and should have some engineering behind it.

Just a thought!

RE: Light Gauge Metal over Wood Framing

The National Frame Builders Association (NFBA) did testing in 1996 of various diaphragms and shear walls, with metal panels screwed to purlins (at the diaphragms) or girts (at the shear walls).  The publication is called "1996 Diaphragm Test."

Since you are trying to mitigate the high cost of steel. Why not consider applying plywood over the studs. I see a 4x8 sheet goes for ~ $18 this week. I doubt sheet steel is as economical. The code covers this for shear value well.
