AutoCAD to G-Code

AutoCAD to G-Code

AutoCAD to G-Code

(OP)
I am currently looking to upgrade from AutoCAD LT to a software package which will allow me to generate CNC G-code from my drawings (Oxy fuel/Plasma burn table).

What packages are available which will create the G-code as well as create a tool path allowing for "tool width". Everything we make is in 2D.

I would like to continue using AutoCAD because of my familiarity with it but I am not sure of which packages from AutoDesk would fill my needs best.

I have sent an email to AutoDesk for information but I feel that an independant opinion may be more helpful in the long term.

RE: AutoCAD to G-Code

One suggestion:  DON'T put the kerf compensation in the G-code; let the burning machine's controller do it.  That way, your operator can adjust the machine for the condition of the torch, and you can send the same file out to be lasercut when the plasma cutter is down.

RE: AutoCAD to G-Code

One possbility is using a software package such as mastercam to convert your drawing into G-code.  This software allows you to directly import the Autocad drawing under XDF format into mastercan and with some initial commands convert your drawing into G-code or use mastercam directly to create G-code. Hope this helps - John
