T-1 vs. AR400 steel sheets

T-1 vs. AR400 steel sheets

QUESTIONS:

1.  Are there any special requirements for using fillet welds to attach A36 steel elements to AR225/400 plate?  Are E70XX electrodes appropriate?

2.  Can AR225/400 plate be rolled to a 13ft radius?  Also, can it be bent to form 120 degree angles? How about 90 degree angles?

3.  Can self-tapping screw be used to attach to AR225/400 plate?

5.  What size sheets is AR225/400 typically available in? 4ftx8ft?

RE: T-1 vs. AR400 steel sheets

0501;
The AR plate products that we use in the Power industry are typically welded with E7018 low hydrogen weld rod. Other welding processes can be used with undermatched filler metal strength in comparison to the ARXX plates.

The preheat depends on plate thickness. We typically use a 200 deg F preheat to remove surface moisture. The interpass temperature is very important, and should be limited to 400 deg F.

I have included a web site on HARDOX AR plate (because we normally use their product line) there are other  abrasion resistant plate steel suppliers. The technical information they provide from their web site should answer your other questions;

Here is website that has all the information you need.
You might have to copy and paste the link.

Forming

13'radius should be no problem. You need a good plate roll man.

To bend,you will to "air form". Most press brake die suppliers also have a tonnage chart. Open air dies work well with a experienced press brake operator.

Self tapping screws? Nice thought,but I would not count on it.

RE: T-1 vs. AR400 steel sheets

1.    Pre heat and control interpass temperatures as metengr says.
2.    This can be thickness dependant, and may require heating.
3.    No, tapping this material is difficult with high speed steel taps. It can be drilled, but flame, plasma, or laser cutting of holes is less expensive. You can cut holes and insert nuts and weld them in if threads are the only choice.
4.    8 ft. X 20 ft. is a common mill size. Most steel suppliers will cut to size.
