New Parts

New Parts

(OP)
I’m trying to uncover the best way to set-up a “part” in SolidWorks. What I want to do is have an initial part that will have certain qualities so that the company parts will be similar in behavior/attributes. I can do a save as template and get most of what I want but cannot get the custom properties to come thru with the new part, is there a work around for this? Example; The custom properties were created by going to the part properties and clicking on "stock size", clinking on the value box, clicking on (3) dimensions within the part window and finally click on Add (then saving as template). The final goal of all this is to have data appear within a drawing BOM automatically for every new part.
While it seems logical to use templates, would a better solution be to create a master parts file and save-as each time?
This should be the first thing, or close to first, a newbie finds in out in training material but have be unable to find it in my four books, or with the provided material. I’m sure this has been addressed and would sure appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

RE: New Parts

Yes, set up a part template, assembly template and drawing template. Remember to put your properties that are in the drawing, into the part and assembly template. Use the Windows Start, Programs, SolidWorks 2004, SolidWorks Tools, and Copy Option Wizard. I hope this makes sense.

RE: New Parts

The Copy Option Wizard is for transferring options from one computer to another ... not between parts & templates.
