problem - points outside modelling limit?

problem - points outside modelling limit?

problem - points outside modelling limit?

(OP)
There seems to be a maximum size of 1km from the origin beyond which points becom invalid.  This is really annoying as I'm modelling a building that has elements with radii of curvature outside this range. Is there an easy fix?

RE: problem - points outside modelling limit?

I'm assuming your hitting the outter barrier of SW. If you do a search on www.Google.com under the comp.cad.solidworks group. You will probably find a post concerning the limitation of just how big you can make a file in SW. I don't remember how big that is, but once you reach that limitation there is nothing more you can do.

FAQ731-376

RE: problem - points outside modelling limit?

As mentioned, you may have reached the size limit...  Is it feasible to scale the model?

RE: problem - points outside modelling limit?

I believe it was 1024 meters square, centered on the origin.

RE: problem - points outside modelling limit?

Actually, in this particular case, there is a work around.  We have the same problem drawing large radii.  Open a sketch and draw a line that joins the two end points. Calculate the length of the middle ordinate and draw a line in from the center of your first line, the length being the middle ordinate.  Close and save this sketch.  Make a new sketch on the same plane and pick "insert", "curve", "curve through reference points" and pick your three points on the curve from the previous sketch.  This works for curves with a radius greater than the 1 km limit.

It's not easy, but you have to do what you have to do.

I checked at one time, and apparently this limit is inherent with the parasolid kernel, not just solidworks.

Oops, a second sketch doesn't have to be opened, just insert, curve, curve through reference points.

Or you could make construction geometry of the chord to the end points of the arc and perpendicular from its midpoint to that arc for your three point arc at a smaller scale.  Then make the real ones and use equasions to scale up - saves calculations. You could even have some distances driven either way.
