which weld spec would you recommend???

which weld spec would you recommend???

which weld spec would you recommend???

(OP)
Hello All,

I work for an oceanographic weather buoy company. These buoys are usually required to be light weight (thin wall aluminum) which in some case welds are required which are small i.e. 1/16".  We have a reputable weld shop that we have used for 20 years.  Now we have a customer requesting/buying the drawing package for one of our products, but they want us to reference a weld standard on the drawings.  Here in lies the problem, do we reference MIL-Spec, AWS or something else, but most of these standards we know we are stretching the spec (structural) vs. what the welded joint is (in our case a seal that we pressure test for leaks) really used for.  I do not want to reference a spec just to get the job done.

Why not use ASME 9?

RE: which weld spec would you recommend???

I agree with Carburize.  ASME, section 9 would be your best source document.  If you don't want that much detail perhaps an Underwriters Laboratory spec would be satisfactory.
