FCS Engine Proposals
FCS Engine Proposals
(OP)
Curious as to what forum members think of the current engine proposals the US army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) program:
Interesting proposals from Cummins, MTU, & Honeywell (turbine).
Of special interest may be the packaging arrangement of the MTU Series 890:

Any comments on the proposals?

I do not think electric drives will supply the power to weight ratios that a hydraulic drive will.
We applied for SBIR funding for a hydraulic wheel drive that supplies 2,000 ft lbs starting torque, and a constant 70 horsepower from 5rpm to 600rpm to the ground with out any gear train. This wheel drive should have the ability to regenerate about 80% of the braking energy for a short time. Our proposal was turned down.
This hydraulic drive is to work with our linear engines (LEDHO). To save fuel only the number of cylinders required to supply energy will operate. For a picture http://www.danzcoinc.com/Ledho_1.jpg
These wheel drives could be used with several small existing diesel, or gas engines to increase fuel economy of busses and delivery trucks.

If the MTU website is correct, those are some pretty impressive numbers for the 6 cyl series 890: 6 liters, 750 hp @ 4250 rpm. That's a 380 psi bmep and a mean piston speed of about 2900 fpm. I don't know of any other production CI engine that operates at those numbers. It is also a very tidy package with its integrated auxiliaries and dry sump.
Thanks for the link.

When DDC came out with their Series 60, I saw the unveiling at the International Truck Show, in Vegas or Anaheim in about '85 or '86, and made the statement to several in the gathered crowd that 'if I was a Cummins or Cat. salesperson, I would be quaking in my boots.' Some who heard me laughed at me, extoling the virtues of the current breed of Cummings and Cats.
As Paul Harvey says, now we know the rest of the story.
I am glad to see DDC and their new corporate partner in the forefront again.
