The protective relaying advanced with the advent of microprocessors to digital (=numerical) relay protection that incorporates many applicable protective functions, often characterized by ANSI Device Numbers (25 for synchrocheck relay) into one integrated numerical protective system that is programmable, flexible, functional, compact, etc.

Comment: A compatibility of microprocessor relays with the station power management system is essential. Else, additional hardware interfaces are required, which increase cost and reduce reliability.
