RC Filter or LC ???????

RC Filter or LC ???????

RC Filter or LC ???????

(OP)
Hello
WE are designing a converter to control a induction machine. The converter uses the IGBTs (8KHz) to create the AC current. We know that a filter at the output of converter is necessary. But I can know if I should take a RC filter or a LC filter. Can anyone tell me how and when we chose one of those???

Thanks

RE: RC Filter or LC ???????

The RC is out of question due to power losses. It then depends on a lot of factors if you shall run without any motor filter at all, a du/dt filter or a full sine filter. Search www and the ABB, AB and Siemens sites. Lots of information there.

Suggestion: Visit

for appropriate filters/reactors
The converter output filtering can get complicated and it is very important to be correct for the motor and for the ground and air environments in terms of EMI emissions and ground leaking (stray) currents.

RE: RC Filter or LC ???????

You might want to check out the Schaffner website on www.schaffner.com
At Siemens we have been using their filter technology (both for EMI and dv/dt & sinusoidal output) for a number of years and had excellent support and technical backup.
There's a lot of useful info on their site.

What abt SiC?

RE: RC Filter or LC ???????

Silicon Carbide transistors? not just yet. Maybe in a few years but the technology for mass produced devices is still in the early stages.

RE: RC Filter or LC ???????

So, they are on their way? Interesting to know.
