Importing drawing but scale off by 25.4

Importing drawing but scale off by 25.4

Importing drawing but scale off by 25.4

(OP)
Hello
Perhaps someone can advise, is this a bug, a setting or problem to live with.
I make a single line in Adobe Illustrator exactly 1 inch long and export it as a *.DWG. Then open that *.DWG in AutoCAD (2002) the line is now 25.4 inches long. As this is the conversion factor of inches to millimeters it would appear that there is a setting in one of the programs that is wrong.
But, in which program and where would that setting be..... I can work around it now that I know the scale factor.... but still a pain to deal with.
Could someone with Adobe Illustrator and AutoCAd experience please confirm this so I know it is not just "my" system.
Thanks
Ralph

RE: Importing drawing but scale off by 25.4

Hi Ralph,

I import the Illustrator.dwg in AC with "_insert". Then I scale the block with "varia". I don't know an automatically tool... maybe tomorrow ...hmmmm ....

RE: Importing drawing but scale off by 25.4

It sounds like Adobe uses the metric system internally and outputs in metric.

Not a big deal, really - just scale the Adobe drawings by 1/25.4 after importing them.  Or use the decimal style in dimensioning and add a "mm" suffix.

Autocad does not store it's database in metric, English or Imperial units.  It does not care if the thing is 1 inch, angstrom or light year long - to Autocad it is simply 1 unit long.

If I am drawing something that is in metric, I draw in metric and use decimal dimensioning with a "mm" suffix.  If I am drawing something in feet and inches, I draw in feet and inches and use the architectural dimension style that adds the feet and inch marks after the value.

Thanks... Working around the problem is no big deal for the few times that it happens.... now that I know it is not "my" setup and that I know the scale factor
