Recommended Slipring Material ?

(OP)
What is the ideal slipring material for a 1.6 MW, 1500 RPM motor with a rotor current of about 900 Amps ? The motor is for a paper mill where there is lot of moisture and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is used for bleaching.

1. Phosphor Bronze  (what is recommended alloy composition)

2. Brass (80 Cu 20 Zn)

3. Steel

4. Copper

Also, what is recommended grade of carbon brush for such a slipring working in the said atmosphere ?

Phosphor Bronze alloy; 90%Cu 10%Zn 0.4%Ph as a deoxidizer.

CuNi  =  94%Cu, 4%Ni, 2%Zn Harder than above to cast but superior to wear even in contaminated areas.

Monel Metal 29%Cu, 68%Ni, 3% combination of C Fe Mn. Used in corrosive atmosphers e.g. sea water, ammonia.

Also gummetal ASTM B143-1A opr 1B

And there are others as well.

Thx Doug.

From H2S point of view, which is better material? I have seen copper turning black in hydrogen sulphine environment.

RE: Recommended Slipring Material ?

I'd give Helwig Carbon Products or Morganite a call and see what they recomend.

Suggestion: If there is a little bit more money to be spent, gold might also get some considerations.
