SA36 Mild Steel data for -60F

SA36 Mild Steel data for -60F

SA36 Mild Steel data for -60F

(OP)
Does anyone have any type of data on A36 mild steel at temperatures in the -60F range?

All data I have only goes to -20F and our client is adamant about A36.  I am needing some supporting material to reference to talk them into SA240-304, or receive the engineering data at this low temperature.

Stresses and impact test would be great.

RE: SA36 Mild Steel data for -60F

ASME VIII, UCS66 covers the issue of using carbon steel materials at low temperatures.  A quick look at UCS66 will show you that SA36 will not be acceptable at -60F unless you can show adequate toughness via impact testing.  Test all you wish, but SA36 will not give you adequate impact test results at -60F.

In my personal files I have numerous CVN results for A36, A283 and A7 materials with results of 10 ft-lbs or less by the time a test temperature of +20F is reached.

The use of SA240-304 would certainly work, but it may be an overkill.  The temperature of -60F that you mention is typical of liquified propane or ammonia storage.  API-620 is the typical standard for storage tanks for these services.  A516-70 (normalized and made to fine-grain practice) is a common material.

Hope this helps
