Grounding Diagram

Grounding Diagram

Grounding Diagram

(OP)
Hello,

Does anyone have an example of a grounding diagram?  I am not looking for technical specifications, just typical drawing example layout.

I have done one in the past, and it turned out OK, but what really needs to be shown?... and how do I show it?.. are the questions?

1. Should I show all bonds and grounds on the same diagram?

2. Should I overlay the grounding on a mechanical layout drawing or should I incorporate the grounds into the wiring or single line diagrams?

3. Are there specific linetypes or thicknesses as a standard to use?

Any general suggestion from past experience are appreciated.

Thanks
Tulum

RE: Grounding Diagram

Suggestion: Essentially, there are grounding schematic diagrams that would show the grounding circuits with grounding resistances and reactances, and the various grounding interface connections. Then, there are grounding layout diagrams that include the hardware physical layout, often to the scale. Larger projects, e.g. power plants, tend to have these diagrams elaborated.

RE: Grounding Diagram

Is this for substation grounding or for industrial/commercial facility grounding?

Jbartos,

This is for a grounding layout diagram....

Jghrist,

The application is an Industrial/commercial facility...

It is for a control room that will house basic 4160v and 600v electrical equipment (transformer, MCC, Soft Starters, etc).

My problem is that no one here makes grounding diagrams...there is a text standard for grounding that is followed, however I feel a picture would mean a thousand words.  Just trying to see if there is any recommended standard.

Thanks

RE: Grounding Diagram

Comment: Typically, the grounding layout diagram includes the physically accurate layout of grounding conductors, many details of actual connections, e.g. to structural steel, to grounding rods, to various equipment, grounding conductor sizes, conduit sizes where in conduits, identification of equipment ground, system ground, isolated (instrument, "quiet", "noiseless") ground, etc.

RE: Grounding Diagram

I don't think there is a standard format for grounding diagrams, but I agree that they are a good idea.  Anything that clearly communicates to the electrical contractor what needs to be done (but not necessarily how to do it in detail) is acceptable.  The simpler the better.  The problem with text, especially if it is in a construction spec and not on the drawings, is that it is often overlooked.
