What is the current best program to use for vibration simulation?
If the topic was already discussed, please give me a link for that.
I considered ANSYS, Nastran,I-deas PRO maybe ABAQUS or Matlab using  FEM. How and in what regards, these programs should be compared? What is the difference between them.

Thanks.

some more details about your applications would help to answer your question.

Recently I am interested in Vibration Simulation. Therefore I am trying to understand the basics of the process and what software to start with. Thanks.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

Try LMS.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

<chris9>Do LMS make a vibration simulation package? If so it is not an industry standard.

<temel2> you do need to explain what you are trying to do, failing that Nastran is a good pace to start.

Thanks for the replies. My final goal is to simulate the vibration in Ship Structures. I am planning to start with basic structures to complex structures. For example from basic shaft vibration to engine / foundation system vibration. An example will is,

I hope this is a more detailed message and clarifies my point exactly.
Thanks.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

Nastran is what we'd use. IDEAS FEM is too simplistic (I don't know why exactly) , ANSYS would also be fine.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

GregLocock,

LMS FEA package is good at dynamic analysis and the company has extensive experience of testing as well. It's worth a look.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

I am with Greg on this one. LMS has a good acoustical analysis software, a vibration and acoustical test software, and a multi-body dynamic analysis software but I don't know of their FEA software. What is it called?

Nastran gets my vote also, as for IDEAS it lets too many bad elements pass through the solver.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

sorry,i am also the one who's waiting for reply...Now i am working with a task to analyse the curve of vibrations.i have got the real result, and i make simulations with Mathworks' Simulink in order to make comparations.am i choosing the right software?

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

LMS's Virtual.Lab software has a module called Noise and Vibration. It is designed to do system level vibration simulation using assemblies of FE models, Modal models or FRF based models. When components or sub-assemblies are based on FE you can use a number of different solvers (NASTRAN, ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.) to calculate results. It also can take a component that is described by a set of TEST modes and create an equivalent FE model and submit it to the FE solver as part of a larger assembly. This package is comprehensive and expensive. However, no one else makes anything like it in the market. If you are working on large system models and want to do design for N&V this is a must have tool. Solution times for their solvers are orders of magnitude faster than the traditional FE model solutions. It is worth a look.

RE: Vibration Simulation Software

For a large scale model such as a ship, you may want to consider a package with craig bampton or similar substructuring method.  MSC and NE Nastran offer this capability.
