6kV CABLE JOINTS

6kV CABLE JOINTS

6kV CABLE JOINTS

(OP)
Are cable joints common practice on HV cables? I have a long run of 6kV cable carrying less than nominal load that has developed a fault mid stream. I normally prefer to re-run damaged HV cables but it is not cost or time effective in this scenario.

What sort of documentaion or procedure is there in splicing HV cables?

RE: 6kV CABLE JOINTS

hi vanskat ,procedure for jointing/splicing of hv cables will depend on the type of cable how/ it is installed
lets have some details , eg,paper/lead/xlpe/epr
above or below ground,why it failed etc

Thanks for the reply.

Cables are pretty old (32yrs) SIEMENS's cables NYFGbY run above ground where :
 NY= Protodur Insolation
 F  = Armour of Galv. Flat Steel Wires
 Gb= Helix of Galv. Steel Tape
 Y  = Protodur Sheath

Replacement length is around 400 meters. A bit of cable 'chaffing' occurred at a bend along the cable tray route.

RE: 6kV CABLE JOINTS

is protodur a trade name?
i not heard of protodur,is it a
plastic,rubber or paper insulation and what type of screening does it use?
when you contact a contractor it would be usefull to
have a sample so that a suitable joint can be found

I typically use Raychem HVS or HVT type splice kits....

The electrical infrastructure one of our plants in Guinea is very old and has some unorthodox equipment. I guess I am not old enough to recognize some of them!!!!

However,
I found a solution to the old HV cable issue using a Raychem product

Thanks
