I'm trying to get an idea of the forces that an offshore anchor chain experiences in currents. To give an idea of size, the chains are up to 100 kg/m.

If anyone knows approximate drag coefficients or would like to have a guess(!) then it'd be very much appreciated!!

Hi marinepete,

This would probably depend on the geometry of the link itself, ie. diameter of steel vs apperture.  That being said, Cd of 1.0 is a good start for most cases in areas outside overlapping links and 1.5 for areas of overlap.

Yes, 1 is great place to start. Not many (?any) bluff bodies are worse than that - maybe that's the definition of a bluff body!

I assume this would be non-dimensionalised with respect to the projected area of the chain? I better get calculating!

Yes, force = 1/2*Cd*A*v^2*density, in the right units.
