In writting, should I use, "...brochures are attached to the rear of this documentation kit."

or should I use, "...brochures are attached at the end of this documentation kit."

Both sound correct, but which is "more" industry standard for engineering type documents?

RE: Referenced Attachments

How about "... brochures are attached."?

RE: Referenced Attachments

A couple large companies that I have been at, always used "to". (Of course it's "at" the end, but it is attached "to" it)

RE: Referenced Attachments

How about "attached herein?"

RE: Referenced Attachments

At the end sounds better. How about this -

Brochures are listed in the Appendix or are in Appendix 1. An Appendix is normally found "at the end"

RE: Referenced Attachments

"rear" sounds wrong to me, but "at the back" sounds OK (to my ear at least).

"... the end" is fine.

Thanks all, I decided to go along the lines of zdas04 and IRstuff's suggestions, and used "see attached".

RE: Referenced Attachments

References are some one else's writings and are not included in the document. References should come at the end of the primary doc and before everything else

Appendixes - these follow references and usually contain glossaries, lists, acronyms etc.

Annexes - these come next and are used to expand in detail aspects of the primary document where this level of detail would be too wordy or not necessarily important to a reader but where it would be relevant to a wider audience or more senior hierarchy.

Attachments - (other media) follow-on from annexes and are from other sources necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the primary doc or to support it.

The doc is usually compiled in the above order and a Table of Contents included after the Title Page to describe the doc structure to the reader(s).

References can be listed in primarily three ways;

1. Reference A - your letter, Composite Failure,  dated 20 Jun 04. The generally follow the Table of Contents. You would generally use this method where less than ten references are cited.

2. A number beside a specific word or at the end of a phrase/sentence(1).

3. Referring to another part of the doc - (see p23, para2), (see Fig 11) or just (Fig 11), (see table 2) or just (Table 2)

A list of references with the relevant number is supplied at the end of the primary doc.

Annexes, appendixes etc are simply referred to as (see Annex A) or just (Annex A)

These are not hard and fast rules but the way I was taught in the military who have manuals for every type of communication you can think of.

Kerry

RE: Referenced Attachments

I forgot to mention that things like pamphlets, brochures etc are generally referred to as 'enclosures' not attachments.

An enclosure such as a product brochure would generally be referred to in general terms, "I've enclosed a brochure on whatever by whomever", or simple "see enclosed brochure".

Attachments are generally more formal components and necessary to the doc in question while enclosures are generally for information purposes but not essential.

Thanks for the info Kiwikid.

What I am working on is a documentation kit for several product lines my company makes, which we are trying to get CE Certification for.  The company doing our investigation has requested several items, brochures being one, so I think they would indeed fall under the catagory of "formal components and necessary to the doc".

RE: Referenced Attachments

Good for you Mango (or is it "Mad", I never know).  Avoid the engineering curse of using 10 words when 3 do just fine.
