Filename Extension case sensitivity...

Filename Extension case sensitivity...

Filename Extension case sensitivity...

(OP)
This is not a big concern, but I have noticed that in saving SolidWorks files (*.slddrw, *.sldprt, & *.sldasm) the extensions have been saved in uppercase or lowercase. I have not been able to workout why it is doing this. I work with my extensions visible on MS WindowsXP Pro. Has anyone else noticed this inconsistency & know why this happens?

Take care & have fun!

RE: Filename Extension case sensitivity...

Most of mine show up in UPPERCASE. Only some show up in lowercase. Most of what I can tell here is that the lowercase parts, etc... are from either parts made by SW (Toolbox parts, etc..) or imported files that were saved as SW files.

It doesn't really matter SW will open either one. It's not case senstive, just along as you have the extension correct.

RE: Filename Extension case sensitivity...

I've ended up with a few ".sldPRT" and ".sldASM" files when doing a mass save-as with references and file renaming.  Looks awkward but still works.

Many web site servers are case-sensitive.  If you are posting files on a site, this may be something to consider.

RE: Filename Extension case sensitivity...

This is a problem in some instances.  For example where I work we have the drawing name linked to the file name, which we then DXF out to a mac server and use in another software program for cutting parts on a cnc laser.  Lower case throws everything out of whack on us, but if you do save with lower case, you can't just rename.  The best way I find is to save as a copy with a different name, delete the original with awkward case and then save again with the correct case.

RE: Filename Extension case sensitivity...

Another reason, is we save all of our customer parts with a revision extension on thier part number such as blablabla-rA for: customer drawing blablabla customer revision A.

RE: Filename Extension case sensitivity...

I don't know if this is application dependent or OS dependent.

There's some freeware file utilities that let you change file names in a folder to upper case, lower case..., that could help you.
