shock absorbers

(OP)
i am looking for compact shock absorbers for a motorcycle.  they must be strong but don't need to travel too much.  this is just preliminary research so i do not have any calculations at the moment.  i am more just looking for direction or a brand or something like that so i can start to determine specs and what not.  any information you could provide on small compact shocks would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

RE: shock absorbers

Google for gas dampers (or gas springs.) I just finished an extensive project where these are being used.

RE: shock absorbers

If you have the $$$, try Penske and/or Ohlins.  Forget any oil/emulsion types-they're much cheaper but are junk.

RE: shock absorbers

As Metalguy suggests, Penske or Ohlins would be a start but an expensive one. Have you considered a motorcycle "boneyard" or Ebay? You may be able to get someones OE shock after they have upgraded. Based on what you are trying to do, look for a similar style bike to get castoffs from.

RE: shock absorbers

Do you need 1, 10, 100, a million?

If you need only a few, visit your local motorcycle shop, or as Mandrake suggests, find a junkyard with bikes.

Biker aftermarket go-fast shops and catalogs would also have a selection.

The formula Ford, formula Atlantic set also use some neat little dampers.

If you need lots, talk to Tokico, Sachs, Koni, Monroe, etc.
