MATERIAL FOR STAINLESS CAM

MATERIAL FOR STAINLESS CAM

(OP)
I am looking for a stainless steel that I can use to make a cam. As a standard we use 1117 hot roll steel and carborize and harden to 58/60 Rc. The cam drives a spring loaded lever
and will have a stainless cam follower rolling on it.Is 440c the way to go here? The machine will be cleaned with a cloride solution. Thanks for any advice

RE: MATERIAL FOR STAINLESS CAM

Chloride will probably corrode the 440C, you might get better corrosion resistance from 17-7.

Sorry thats all I can help with....

RE: MATERIAL FOR STAINLESS CAM

Please clarify cleaning “with a cloride solution.”  This will corrode the 1117 steel and convince you that 440C is not truly stainless.

For alternative alloys, see responses of TVP and others in
Thread330-24316

For case hardening SS without loss of corrosion resistance via the Kolsterising® process, see
Thread330-49696
