Artic / Antartic

Artic / Antartic

Artic / Antartic

(OP)
One pronunciation that really peeves me is the description of the polar regions as the Artic and the Antartic. I hear it all the time, including from people who should know better. I suspect that they even think it's spelt that way!

My dictionary defines "Artic" as being an abbreviation of "articulated vehicle" (a.k.a. semi-trailer). I am not sure what "Antartic" means - possibly a rigid-bodied truck (being the opposite of an "artic")?

RE: Artic / Antartic

Just for the sake of good reading the word is antarctic (relating to the south pole or to the region near it).

RE: Artic / Antartic

Each pole can be viewed as antipodes (lit. opposite the feet) from the other pole. In the UK the term antipodes will normally refer to Australasia, being on the other end of a diameter from the UK.

Good Luck
