Adverb placement

Adverb placement

Adverb placement

(OP)
A previous thread in this forum said preferred adverb placement is after the verb.  For this sentence I read in a journal:

"...process that was originally invented and patented by..."

Should it be written "...process that was invented and patented originally by..."?

Thanks.

Cory

RE: Adverb placement

I find that people who put adverbs last are trying to hide something, usually.

RE: Adverb placement

Well, if the OED has finally sanctioned split infinitives, surely there can be no great sin in splitting transitive and intransitive verbs. It's really a matter of style.

RE: Adverb placement

Which verb is the author intending to modify? Both? And is there such a thing as either an unoriginal invention or unoriginal patent? Maybe "original" can be deleted.

stevenal,

Good question.  I think both, but I am not sure.  I think there are unoriginal patents and inventions - the paper clip was patented originally by X, and subsequent patents have been given to Y and Z.

Cory

RE: Adverb placement

If there is only one patent, then original is unecessary.  Good point stevenal.  However Cory also made a good point which asppies otherwise and seems necessasry.
