Pump and Filter Selection
Pump and Filter Selection
(OP)
Hi. I'm new here and this sure looks like a great site. I'm in need of a pump to pull hydraulic oil from a sump, send it through a filter, and back into the sump. The oil is low pressure and I only need about 10 gpm of flow, basically just something to continuously cycle the oil throught the filter. Any suggestions on specific pumps and filters that will fulfill my needs?

RE: Pump and Filter Selection
I ask these questions, because I've been working on a very similar project, and these are all questions I've had to answer before I could put a legitimate proposal on paper.
In general, you'll likely need a positive displacement pump. A gear pump will no doubt suit your needs. (The same style pump is in your car motor.) But you may be able to get away with a pump that is either lower cost, easier maintenance, ....Do a google search on double diaphragm, screw, piston, peristaltic, vane, gear, lobe... just to name a few. Centrifugal pumps are generally not recommended for viscous fluids. Also check out the Pumps and Fluid Mechanics engineering forum for some great background info, or do a keyword search on positive displacement (PD) pumps. Good luck.

1.Purpose – What do you want to accomplish?
2.Type of Fluid: Viscosity and Temperature.
3.Volume of fluid to be cleaned.
4.Type of contaminates you what to remove – partial size level (how clean is clean), water removal, solvents etc.
5.Circulation path through holding tank (reservoir). Location of reservoir baffles and in / out ports.
6.Filtering flow rate: determines size of system (Pump inlet 2-4ft/sec, return 6 – 8 ft/sec).
7.Filter: dirt holding capacity
8.Vertical distance above or below reservoir flow level?
Good Luck

Would someone here be kind enough to link me to sites where I can posibly get demos of PDMS or PDS software. I need to have some appreciation of these software before making a recommendation to my boss on which to buy.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Try www.hilliardcorp.com as a starting place. They have plenty of competition, (no pun intended, guys.)
