Overweight Deer
Overweight Deer
(OP)
I was driving on a back road this weekend when I passed a sign that stated:
"Heavy Deer Area"
"Heavy Deer Area"

RE: Overweight Deer
RE: Overweight Deer
Should they be "off" of the road or "out" of the road?
It seems they would be "on" the road but not "in" the road, thus they would be "in" the way of traffic and should get "out" of the way..
Of course we all know what you mean.
Just a thought,
ietech
RE: Overweight Deer
"Out" is more appropriate; kids, being kids, could easily be floating over the roadway, which "out" would preclude, while "off" would not.

RE: Overweight Deer
"Keep out of the space delineated by the surface of the road and extending vertically to infinity and horizontally from the intersection of a line drawn from the base of this sign perpendicular to the center-line of the roadway, for a distance of x as measured along the center-line of the roadway."
would be required. However this seems excessively wordy for colloquial usage.
RE: Overweight Deer
"Do Not Pass When Opposing Traffic Present"
We always thought this one was pretty funny. I mean really now why would I pass into opposing traffic?

So tell me, what kind of committee is needed to come up with a speed limit of 11.5mph? (see, i just had to explore the site further) I can understand that [&phi] and [&pi] for that matter, have awkward numbers but a speed limit?

RE: Overweight Deer
The Swedish engineers have to design their cars for a world market where deer can only make a mess of the front grill and irritate the driver but in their own country the Moose (mice?) enter the car via the windscreen causing more than a passing annoyance to the driver. Doubtless, with only a domestic market, they would have designed the Volvo with a higher profile.
Moose warning signs are in abundance. Perhaps what is also needed are signs facing into the forrests along the edges of roads warning "Fast Cars Crossing". Who would take more notice of their signs is moot. We could then determine if "sign blindness" (a recognised problem)is more prevalent among humans or animals. If the accident rate drops then plainly animals are more intelligent than drivers. If there is no change then we may conclude that people and animals are equally sign blind.

I recall reading some years ago, an article about moose in Canada.
It seems that moose are sufficiently smart to figure out that it is easier to walk on the railroad tracks in the winter, rather than push through several foot deep snow.
However, the moose are not smart enough to get out of the way of the trains.
Apparently hitting a moose with a locomotive at speed makes a rather impressive splat.

Here's a sign I saw the other day I liked, outside a pharmacy:
"virtually painless body piercing"

RE: Overweight Deer
The big neon sign across the front read Massage Parlour
and the smaller sign below it on the right side said Available Rear Access.
I couldn't help but chuckle whenever I saw this.
