Overweight Deer

Overweight Deer

Overweight Deer

(OP)
I was driving on a back road this weekend when I passed a sign that stated:

"Heavy Deer Area"

RE: Overweight Deer

Was that anywhere near the "Slow Children Playing"?  If the kids are that slow, keep them out of the road!

RE: Overweight Deer

Tick

Should they be "off" of the road or "out" of the road?

It seems they would be "on" the road but not "in" the road, thus they would be "in" the way of traffic and should get "out" of the way..

Of course we all know what you mean.

Just a thought,

ietech

RE: Overweight Deer

"Out" is more appropriate; kids, being kids, could easily be floating over the roadway, which "out" would preclude, while "off" would not.

RE: Overweight Deer

If they are slow children, I suppose there is no accounting for what they might be up to, on or in or over or by the road.

RE: Overweight Deer

To be precise something along the lines of:

"Keep out of the space delineated by the surface of the road and extending vertically to infinity and horizontally from the intersection of a line drawn from the base of this sign perpendicular to the center-line of the roadway, for a distance of x as measured along the center-line of the roadway."

would be required.  However this seems excessively wordy for colloquial usage.

RE: Overweight Deer

Ok a sign commonly seen on two (well technically two w/ a passing/truck lane) highways in michigan is:

"Do Not Pass When Opposing Traffic Present"

We always thought this one was pretty funny. I mean really now why would I pass into opposing traffic?

RE: Overweight Deer

Oh well, we have "Give way to trains", which has always semed rather redundant to me. On the other hand given the local standard of driving maybe they are aware that the laws of physics are not well understood.

Cheers

RE: Overweight Deer

One of my favorite road signs appears on a access road into the Anchorage airport while you drive over a part of the field.

"Yield to taxiing Aircraft"

It's one I pay attention to.

RE: Overweight Deer

"Caution, no warning signs"

RE: Overweight Deer

Kiwikid, these web sites are going to ruin me. I ought to warn people not to follow the links i posted in other threads, i am getting no work done and laugh so much i need therapy.

So tell me, what kind of committee is needed to come up with a speed limit of 11.5mph? (see, i just had to explore the site further) I can understand that [&phi] and [&pi] for that matter, have awkward numbers but a speed limit?

RE: Overweight Deer

Some of those signs are priceless.

RE: Overweight Deer

Ah! i meant [&Pi] and [&Phi], those capital letters are important.

RE: Overweight Deer

And the ";", it seems. See, i am learning.
Π, Φ

RE: Overweight Deer

Mention of heavy deer can be dangerous in itself.

I once said, you have become very heavy dear. I still have the scars to prove it

RE: Overweight Deer

It's not the weight of the deer that is of concern, but the length of their legs.

The Swedish engineers have to design their cars for a world market where deer can only make a mess of the front grill and irritate the driver but in their own country the Moose (mice?) enter the car via the windscreen causing more than a passing annoyance to the driver. Doubtless, with only a domestic market, they would have designed the Volvo with a higher profile.

Moose warning signs are in abundance. Perhaps what is also needed are signs facing into the forrests along the edges of roads warning "Fast Cars Crossing". Who would take more notice of their signs is moot. We could then determine if "sign blindness" (a recognised problem)is more prevalent among humans or animals. If the accident rate drops then plainly animals are more intelligent than drivers. If there is no change then we may conclude that people and animals are equally sign blind.

RE: Overweight Deer

I had a friend who used some "deer whistles" on his car, which he had received as a gift from his mother, but to no avail... she later asked whether his stereo had been turned up too loud to hear the alarm...

This is getting rather far off-topic, but...

I recall reading some years ago, an article about moose in Canada.

It seems that moose are sufficiently smart to figure out that it is easier to walk on the railroad tracks in the winter, rather than push through several foot deep snow.

However, the moose are not smart enough to get out of the way of the trains.

Apparently hitting a moose with a locomotive at speed makes a rather impressive splat.

RE: Overweight Deer

Are there moose in Volvoland?

Here's a sign I saw the other day I liked, outside a pharmacy:

"virtually painless body piercing"

RE: Overweight Deer

I used to take public transit into work back when I was in the big city.  Every day I had to walk by one of the funniest signs I can remember.

The big neon sign across the front read                   Massage Parlour
and the smaller sign below it on the right side said        Available Rear Access.

I couldn't help but chuckle whenever I saw this.
