2001 Format Question

2001 Format Question

2001 Format Question

(OP)
Hi,
Perhaps I can get some clarification here....
It is my understanding that when you save a drawing a copy of the format also gets saved - is this correct?
In other words, the format does not get retrieved from the format directory every time a drawing is opened?

What I am trying to do is set up a directory that displays only the latest rev. of our company formats. I would like to "archive" the non-current formats without having a thousand drawings blow up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JW

RE: 2001 Format Question

Hello,

The format file, I don't think gets saved, but if you make changes to tables on the form these changes will get 'remembered' by Pro-E and when you open the drawing up these changes will be remembered.

For example, on our drawing sheets, we have a table on the left for revisions, material specs, finish specs and Notes.

The height of the table cell for Material Specs on the form is 100. Occasionaly we have to make it longer, but the form table cell remains at 100. But when you close the drawing, check it in, if you're using Intralink, when you open the drawing the table cell will be the longer length.

Also on our drawings we have a company logo, imported on the form from DXF as a symbol, if you change this, all drawings already created, with the symbol on, will be updated to the changes.

Does this answer your question?

RE: 2001 Format Question

JW,

I agree with ONLYDRAFTER. As far as I know the format is not saved unless you alter it's content (changing tables). The info you filled in is saved with the drawing.

Thanks guys....
Yes, you are right. The format does not get saved.
I temporarily changed the config option; drawing_format_dir to the new folder that I wanted to use. When I opened old drawings, the tables were intact, but the rest of the format was missing......
What I really want to do is have a folder that only shows the latest format when you start a new drawing.
I suppose that I could use blank templates?
Any other suggestions?

Thx

JW

RE: 2001 Format Question

Hello,

Not sure whether this is any use, but how we do it is have all the drawing sheets as .frm, which are stored in their own folder. When we start a new drawing we select one of the drawing sheets from commonspace, so they are always updated if any changes are made to the format.

But whatever you do, never DELETE any of these .frm files and rename others, do this really make a mess.

RE: 2001 Format Question

I guess the best thing is to have the formats "read only" so not anybody can mess around with them. If the format it is updated (usually just one person only is updating) that should be renamed (e.g. a_size_2004 or something) and placed in a specific folder and used for the new drawings, while the old ones are still used as they are for the old drawings. If there is an up rev for one old drawing (using an older format), the format has to be replaced with the latest one.
