NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP for FEA

NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP for FEA

NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP for FEA

I am trying to buy a laptop that will work for FEA problems with 300k+ DOF, nonlinear, for modeling, preprocessing, solve and post processing. Any one has ideas about the laptop manufacturer and model name/number?

thank you

RE: NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP for FEA

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5150 3.06gig processor with 1 gig of memory and a 60gig hard drive.  I am using the full Algor MES (Mechanical Event Simulation) program suite.  The largest model that I have run todate on it had over 400,000 brick elements.  I would buy more memory given it to do over.

The thing that slows a laptop down is the hard drive.  You will get much better performance with an auxilary hardrive connected through a firewire or usb 2.0 hub.

I don't think you will have any problems finding a laptop that will do the job. The only thing, as far as I can see, you have to make sure is that the harddrive is big enough.

However, there are disadvantages when using a laptop instead of a stationary computer. The hard disk is for example slower and I have have not seen a laptop with Xeon processors yet. Also, make sure that the graphics board has the functionality you need, true OpenGL etc.

That said, I think that most laptops on the market today will get the job done for you.

Good Luck

Thank you both for your help.
This is what I am getting:
Gateway® M675XL with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 8x AGP w/ 128MB DDR video memory graphics card.
I asked Gateway for graphics card upgrade to ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 PRO 8x AGP w/ 128MB DDR video memory, he said the video card can not be changed. I  guess with Gateway you can not choose/customize ur laptops like u can with DELL.
thanks
