Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

(OP)
Hi there,
I am starting to have a new plant and I have got one recommendation from colleage that for fiscal gas metering system, the ultrasonic flow meter would be the good option for this plant.

As far as I know the Ultrasonic meter has not been proven yet in our gas producing industry. And if been proven, there should have new revision from AGA for fiscal gas metering by Ultrasonic flowmeter.

Can anyone correct me if I am wrong?

RE: Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

Ultrasonic metering is the way to go. They have proven accuracy in the 0.1% range and believe that the AGA does have provision for them. The down side is the cost. The last one we considered for a non-AGA application, engineered special cost about $100K.

There were cheaper versions for gas pipelines.

RE: Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

Almost all new custody transfer meter stations in the gas transmission service now use ultrasonic meters except for the low flow rate cases.

They are expensive and you have to have the entire meter tube flow tested at a certified testing facility.

I have thus far installed 6 flare meters and i think they are doing very well when compare to my bulk meter reading,
gotten from orifice plate. They are backed AGA report 9 if am right.

RE: Unproven technique of Ultrasonic meter for fiscal metering

Ultrasonic meters have been accepted (in the US) for some time now for sales and custody transfer by producers and consumers.  A big advantage is the wider turndown accuracy range over orifice meters.  If you need 2 or more meters to cover the expected flowrates (in my experience that was always the case) then ultrasonics can actually be cheaper to install.  You also don't have to worry about changing plates, etc in the middle of the night.
