Castable, corrosion resistant replacement for tool steel

Castable, corrosion resistant replacement for tool steel

(OP)
Need a castable, corrosion resistant replacement for tool steel. The present parts are cast in a tool steel with the following specifications. Tool Steel AISI D7, harden to 65RC, double temper to 59-60 RC, sub zero cool at minus 100 degrees F minimum for 6 hours after first temper. This works well, but need a "corrosion resistant" material to meet guidlines in the food industry. The application is for knife blades in a "pulper", which grinds food and paper waste. Needs to be castable since the blades are curved.

To meet this...harden to 65RC, double temper to 59-60 RC, sub zero cool at minus 100 degrees F minimum for 6 hours after first temper...I would suggest looking at 440C Stainless Steel.

You may try plasma hard coating of ceramics over the current blades those coatings can go up as 70 Rc and even higher. Try the UNION CARBIDE company.

I thank the members for their help thusfar. I add a requirement - Since the application is for knife blades, they need to hold an edge relatively well. Thanks again.

I would suggest that you consider CPM S30V for this application. The following link will provide you with the pertinent material data sheets:

CA40 grade of martensitic stainless steel is a cast alloy. We frequently use this to cast food grade mixer blades and also for pulper mixers used in paper industries. It can e heat treated to desired hardness and gives a good service life.(Repeat orders are infrequent!)

RE: Castable, corrosion resistant replacement for tool steel

I think any material hardened to 65 Rc will keeps its form very well (hold an edge.) I believe my Solingen Chef's knives are 400 series stainless...

RE: Castable, corrosion resistant replacement for tool steel

Hi Gandytable,

my company makes a special type of stainless tool steel called RN15X. It is very similar to an AISI D2 in its wear properties but offers stainless resistance similar to  AISI 440 B / C stainless steels. Its also secondary hardenable so you would be able to do a PVD or CVD coating if this is necessary. We already use this for some food stuff applications.

If interested drop me a mail and I will send you a data sheet.

Richard Buss
