Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

(OP)
I am new to solidworks, never used it before, and this problem is probably easy but please bear with me.  I'm creating a wheel for a design project in Solidworks 2001.  I have basically got a rim with a solid disk in the middle.  I don't know how to create spokes for example.  Any helpful tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

RE: Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

Select a Plane or Face that is parallel to your solid disk, create a sketch of the cut-out area you are looking for, then do an Extrude-Cut.  Then select that feature and apply a Circuler Pattern to it.  This should get you something like a mag wheel.  If you are looking for true spokes, that will be more difficult.

ok, so i sketched my wheel design in a parallel plane but when I go to extrude it says there is more than one open contour.  I have the sketch fully defined, so i'm not sure what the problem is.

RE: Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

If you get that message then where 2 lines come together they don't exactly touch or may pass each other.
You could also have a really short piece of a line segment out there.
The easiest way I can tell you to find it is edit the sketch, without selecting a command draw a box around part of the geometry.  If you see a grip that seems out of place that is probably your problem.

RE: Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

"Open Contour" means the sketch is "open". Before you can extrude it you have to have a closed contour.

You can use Tools\Sketch Tools\"Check sketch for feature" this will let you know what is wrong with your sketch.

RE: Problem designing a wheel in Solidworks

I'd recommend spending the time on each tutorial provided before going much further.  Also, get familiar with the Help index in SolidWorks--excellent resource for such a broad program--very useful for looking up answers to problems in a quick way.
