cryogenic level measurement

cryogenic level measurement

cryogenic level measurement

(OP)
hello,

I need to install level measurements (transmitters) in some tanks which are between 7 to 10meters heigh.
The tanks contain cryogenic fluids (oxygen, nitrogen, argon) and go down to temperatures of -196°C.
Tankpressure: max. 50mbarg.
Important note: the tanks cannot be emptied for installing the measurements.
Has anybody experience in this subject or could suggest a type of measurement or supplier?

thanks in advance.

RE: cryogenic level measurement

load cells work fine, but you have to engineer the installation.

it was also the first thing that crossed our mind, but since we are talking here about existing tanks which cannot be emptied, they are not considered as executable.

RE: cryogenic level measurement

that is not necessarily the case. it certainly complicates the issue, but it is not impossible.

there are other ways to get the level depending on you site, but the usually require engineering involvement, good luck

RE: cryogenic level measurement

Nuclear level might work, but I have no direct experence.

RE: cryogenic level measurement

Would dropping a cyrogenic pressure sensor in the tank work?

We have standard models down to 0-15PSIA that are around $1500.00 .

Lower ranges or PSIG units would require additional charges.

RE: cryogenic level measurement

Most solutions must be installed when the tank is out of service.  One fairly primitive installation is common in the ethylene business.  This uses a standard differential pressure transmitter and vessel taps at the top and bottom of the liquid level.  However, the transmitter is installed higher than both taps about two-meters away from the vessel.  Recognize that the transmitters are usually only rated -40 degree.  In this way, the liquid works as a self bubbler keeping the liquid off the transmitter and the distance permits ambient to warm the tubing and prevent exposing the transmitter to the cryogenic temperature.  Consider a Swagelok bellows manifold rated for the temperature.
