PVC/FRP Tanks - Thickness?

PVC/FRP Tanks - Thickness?

PVC/FRP Tanks - Thickness?

(OP)
We would like to find a book or software in order to size pvc/frp tanks for our plating lines.  We are dealing with chemicals with different specific gravity : it is difficult for us to choose the right thickness.  Where can I find rules of thumb for different products or design criteria?

RE: PVC/FRP Tanks - Thickness?

FRP tanks are designed to the requirements of ASME/ANSI RTP-1.  But rather than fight through this document, why don't you give the tank manufacturer the physical dimensions of the vessel, the wall material desired and the specific gravity of the stored liquid?  They'll design the tank walls and anything else you need.
We have a lot of FRP and PVC tanks in the facilities we design (water/wastewater treatment plants) and we never do the tank design.  We write a specification, give the nozzle locations and other openings and the supplier designs the tank.  We request the calculations for record.

You are right  - but suppose you receive two different sizing coming from two manufacturers.  Undersized or oversized?

RE: PVC/FRP Tanks - Thickness?

I would put the burden on them to produce calculations with references.  Then you can just verify their numbers.

Hi,

There is a very simple way to size the wall, there exists an ASTM standard called D4097-95a that clearly states standard wall thicknesses, as well as all the rest for your exact application.  Pick up a copy at the ASTM site, I think it's about $40 US.

cheers

I second JedClampett's advice.
